Good/Bad feedback for Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul pet food (dry) and Before Grain canned/wet food?
I have recently changed my pets’ foods to healthier (no by-products or grains) foods. My golden retriever is eating Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover’s Soul Large Breed Puppy Formula and my cat is eating Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul Adult Cat Formula and I was just wanting to hear of some experiences with these types of food.
I am not planning to feed my dog wet food but my cat has always had and LOVES it so I was looking for a better brand that what he is on now (Fancy Feast), which, after researching it, almost all of it either contains grains or by-products or both. I was at a pet store the other day and saw Before Grain canned cat food, which is 100% chicken, turkey, quail, etc. depending on the flavor. I believe "Before Grain" is a Merrick brand and was wondering if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with this?
Thanks!
Hi Christy… Before Grain is a Merrick product. I have read reviews which have been both equally positive as well as negative. It is a good product line if either your dog or cat doesn’t turn their nose away from it, it’s worth trying.
Chicken Soup for the pet lover’s Soul is also an excellent product and there are others (both wet and dry) for dogs and cats you may like to consider.

BAD THIS CAT FOOD ALMOST KILLED MY CAT!
I had my both my cats on purina pro-plan then switch both the male and female to Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul dry food, light formula and supposedly low magnesium. Well half way thru the bag my male cat develop crystals which block his urinary tract. Male cats can DIE within 24-48 hours of developing this deadly disease. It cost me $568.00 of Vet bills before he could urinate!
I contacted the company and tried to get some help with the Vet bills and they refused!!! They said they would reimburse me for the cost of the food!! I told them that I had a wellness profile of the cat done 1 year before the problem develop and his PH was normal, on Chicken Soup for the pet Lover’s Soul his PH was off the charts! Both of my cats had very high PH on this cat food, my advice is to stick with anything made by Purina, purina pro-plan is also very good. Also make sure you add at least 2 tablespoons of water to their food and cook up some fresh carrots mash them up and add a teaspoon to their food so they do not develop a weight problem. Dry food has a special flavoring that is sprayed onto the food so that the animal almost becomes addicted to the flavor of that food and will cause the animal to over eat and gain weight.
NPR National Public Radio did run a spot about a month ago saying canned cat food has been link to a high epidemic of diabetes in cats. Some of the cans that cat foods are put into come from China and the chemicals have leached into the food causing diabetes. Purina make both fancy feast, friskies and the purina pro-plan dry food. All cans and product are made in the USA. They do import the fish from thailand, and the grain is imported from Europe and Australia. I do recommend calling the 800 # on the side of all pet food products. Also stay away from the all meat cat foods since they are new on the market and can also lead to problems in cats. It is very hard trying to find a well balance diet for your cat, and since cats need special elements like taurine, you can’t feed them table scraps from what you eat. Just remember everyone, including the Vets are trying to make a buck off you be wary of all cat and dog food. Call the company on a regular basis and see what comes from foreign countries especially China!! Also packaging is important, that is why I like Purina, both of my cats love fancy feast and they never liked the fish made by fancy feast (Purina), later when I called I found out the fish comes from taiwan. Also make sure your pet gets A LOT OF FRESH WATER.
Both of my cats are now fine and as healthy as can be. PS I do not work for Purina nor have I ever worked for them.
I had a cocker spaniel that I was told would die at 8 years he was an epileptic, I changed vets and he took a low dose of phenobarbitaul, I also feed him meat table scraps with alpo, he lived to be16 years he died in my arms. He was the greatest dog!
DON’T TRUST VETS
CALL THE COMPANY AND MONITOR THEM
Woof woof and meow:)
