Snails in small fish tank, are they harmful to our pet fish?

My friends has a two tiny fish in his small plastic tank (the base area of the tank is smaller than an A4 paper).
There is snails in the tank and they reproduce and grow big fast.
I would like to know if the snails are harmful to the pet fish?
If the fish is tiny, like neon tetra size, will the snail eat the fish??

no they are not inherantly dangerous to your fish. no they wont eat them (unless your fish are sick or dying/dead.

the real problems come from the bioload bundles of snails put on your tank..

I once kept pond snails (what I think you have) in a tank by themselves and it was all i could do to keep the snails in and get enough water out to keep it clean. I kept the tank on a east facing windowsill – all the alegea they could eat and tehy made MORE than all the poop I could clean.

this taxes the filter as well as tiny nails getting in it and dying. eventaully just in sheer numbers they could overpopulate and overpollute your tank ( I see polution becoming a problem before depletion of oxygen comming into play)

If you want to manully control the population, Take a stainless spoon and ,using the back, crush the smaller snails – you fish will love the tasty inside bits the shell protects.
{{*******DO NOT CRUSH THEM WITH YOUR FINGER******}}
(snails potentially carry bacteria that can cause NASTY infections if the shell breaks in a way as to puncture your skin(cut you).)

High copper levels in your tank will kill them (copper sulfate(i think) is availble at most pet stores for this purpose) It is safe for most fish.

    I wouldn’t say so.

The Snail will be feeding the waste the fish produce thus helping the quality of the water.

Just make sure there is enough oxygen for all concerned.

  2. no not really / but they will get into your filter system/ i usually toss most in the garbage and only keep a couple in my tank/ do not flush / they will reproduce in sewer system

They will normally not harm the fish but keep the tank clean. The only thing I would worry about is the snails taking over the tank and eating all of the fishes food. Which will, by default, hurt the fish.

yes. need a bigger tank if your friend wants to crate a habitat for both snails and fish. They will outgrow the tiny fish and take away the fish’s resources/ food.

no they are not harmful at all. We started off with two biggish snails then they decided to have family and ended up with about 10 snails or more. we have a 3ft fish tank and I read about clown loaches love to eat snails. So we bought two clown loaches and they do love the snails. we still have a few snails in the tank but they do keep the population down as the snails tend to breed quickly. hope that helps

no i have a snail or two in my tank. they are far from being harmful to the fish. although watch out. if you have a big fish it could swallow a small snail.

could be, if they over populate the tank. sounds like the big snails (about the size of a than a quarter)i think those are o.k., but those little snails make that nasty gel stuff, their terrible. i see a little brown snail in my tank, i get rid of it.

the snails aren’t harmful unless the fish sits on the gravel where they can get to the fish. I had a problem with snails in my smallest tank (15 gall) they reproduced like mad and left snail shells everywhere. i recommend you go to a fish store and buy some snail poison.
