How do I know if my pet fish are happy?

I have some pet discus fish, i feed them every day and clean the water every month and i want to how i can tell if they are happy or not. Also does it matter what kind of fish type you have to tell if they are happy or sad.
It’s more about fish being healthy.
If they are healthy they will be active, alert, swimming about and looking for food when you approach the tank.
Now if normally active fish are hiding or gasping at the surface with fins clamped into their body that indicates they are sick or being harrassed by tankmates. That would count as ‘unhappy’.
Discus require very clean water to stay healthy. Get a water test kit and try to keep the nitrate level down below 10. That will make them happier as well.

Equate happy to mean healthy when it comes to fish.
I suggest a partial water change of roughly 25% every week. Monthly changes are letting the tank go too long.
