A problem, what do you do if your pet bird lays an egg?

My pet bird, i think its a small parrot, layed an egg on the corner of my room, i dont cage my bird so they can move freely. When it feeds it comes to my table to eat a prepared food, but since its always sitting on its egg, how will it eat?

When it gets hungry it’ll eat. Does the bird have a mate? If not the egg isn’t fertilized. People who raise birds know that sometimes they lay egg after egg after egg that isn’t fertile. This can be a problem for them. It’s a motherly instinct they go through and cause health problems for them. Go to a pet store that handles bird supplies an purchase a wooden egg about the size of the one she laid and replace it with her egg. This keeps her from making more eggs. Make sure you get rid of her egg pretty quick because they become rotten then break open—–Man It Do Stink !! Most of the time breeders put the placebo egg in their feed cup.

I would say get rid of the egg… theres no way it will hatch without a male to fertilize it. I don’t know how that would affect the bird emotionally though.

The bird will move when it’s ready to eat. My bird has done this a couple of times even though she doesn’t have a mate. After a while she forgets about the egg and we just take it out of her cage. Some time we will put a toy in the area she laid the egg or rearrange things in her cage to distract her about the missing egg.

is the egg fertile? If so, just put a small dish near your bird (food and water)
birds usually will leave the nest to eat and drink when no one is looking, but just in case..you can always put some close to her.
If not, remove the egg…or she will waste away sitting on it. (carefully, birds can get nasty defending their eggs..I have chicken peck and duck peck scars to prove it!)

Do not through the egg away. I went through excessive egg laying problems with my budgie. She layed and egg, then sat on it. I took it away and she layed more. I talked to my vet about it and she told me to leave the eggs there, so they don’t keep laying more. (my budgie would lay 5-6 each clutch-infertile single female). Unfortunatly she became egg bound and died during surgery.

Bring the food to her. She should lose interest in a couple of weeks and then you can dispose of the egg since it is infertile. Some say that if disposed of too early, she will lay more. Since she has shown her great egg laying ability and dedication, she may make a good mom. Just a thought. Have a tweet year.

Dont get rid of the egg, just put fresh food and water near where she sits. Don’t look at the egg. Soon, the egg might hatch, so you have to be carefull were you step.

My aunt’s birds have eggs all the time.

  9. My friend has two doves that have eggs every once and a while. She lets her birds out and when they are distracted she removes the egg and replaces it with a toy. That way the bird doesn’t starve herself and the egg doesn’t rot in the cage. Hope this helps.

  11. If you just have the one bird then the egg will not hatch. It needs a male to fertilize the eggs. It will probably lay one egg every other day. Put food and water near it and make sure she is in a quiet place.
usually the male and female will take turns sitting on the eggs. she needs a cuttle bone that you can get at a pet store. it will give her what she needs to replenish what her body needs to make the egg shells. Check out some books from the library about the kind of bird you have. It should have information in there about breeding, laying, and feeding birds. Good Luck. 12. Don’t worry. The bird will eat. However, whatever you do, do not touch the egg. Parrots tend to be very territorial about their offspring. I’ve had a parrot who laid an egg. When you aren’t around, it’ll tend to eat because it thinks it’s safe. Kepp leaving prepared food out for it over night or when you leave and it’ll eat it. Good luck with your baby parrot!

  13. dont get rid of the egg if she sits on it all day bring a bowl of food and water and when she gets hungry sh wil eat to check if the egg is really fertile get a flashlight and shine it on the egg if it has a red line on the egg its the birds vien somtimes this is a false prediction. wait if she is sitting on it it is fertile because if it wasnit she would reject it. if it hatches give the girl lots of mashed up wet food that you reguraly fed her so sh ecan give it to the baby. she only laid one egg thats odd parrots uaslly lay 4 to 6 eggs but warning somtimes they get to lay an egg once a day . good luck.
