I was horse riding today and I started petting the horse while I was stopped, and the instructer said you should never do that.
is it true?
No your instructor is incorrect. It is perfectly ok to pet a horse while riding.

No that is not true. It’s good to praise your horse after they do something right. Petting the horse is fine, it calms them down and lets them know you are happy with them.

As long as you stay alert, there is no reason why you can’t. Just make sure there is nothing around that can spook your horse suddenly.

No, you don’t want to rub a horse after riding because the friction from your hand will cause them to catch fire… kidding.
Unless the horse had stopped when it wasn’t supposed to, then petting it then would be the wrong time because you’re praising it for something it shouldn’t be doing.
If you were hanging out in the saddle petting your horse, it feels good for both horse and rider. Your instructor is a strange one.
Edited for my amazing use of the English language.

Thats the biggest lie ever. If your horse is doing a good job, pets are great.

I’ve never heard of that- Did they give a reason why?

Actually I would say that the exact opposite is true. As part of you desensitizing your horse you need to move all around and pet him wherever you can reach. EG – pet his neck, sides, rear. Move your weight side to side, swing your feet back and forth. A well trained horse should ignore all these events. If you horse is a bit spooky about it, you need to keep on doing it till he quiets down. You should not treat a spooky horse like a spooky horse. You need to teach it to calm down with repetition.

If you were on the centre line, then it is okay to give the horse a pat for a reward, but not so much that you forget to sit properly and lose concentration. If you continue to pet him and cause him to stand with his head bent round he will get into the habit of doing this and you should never feed tit bits whilst riding or he will expect to be fed every time he has stopped.
If you were supposed to be halted and preparing to walk on or trot on again then he should not be petted.

No your the instructor is crazy. When the horse is good you have to reward it. If a few pats on the neck are what you can give it’s what you give.

No. Horses need to be praised so that they know they are doing a good job. If you don’t praise them they might feel unappreciated. I have no idea why the instructor would say that.

lol love this question i was told this when i was little (5 years old) this is Absolutely not the case in fact it is the opposite it is very important to praise your horse unless he stopped when he was not supposed to because patting your horse lets him know how well he has done and also helps you to bond with him which is essential to riding if you want him to listen to you. but i think you should ask your instructor as they may have a good reason like they aretrying to get him out the habit of turning his head towards the rider whilst in a lesson which is what could happen if you pat him but other that that there is no reason why you shoulden’t
hope this helps xxx

*snorts* no! Petting horses while riding is perfectly fine and normal, and its actually good. Just don’t pet the horse like after it bucks for example.

When I ride, I always pet the horse and stroke his/her mane to let them know that they should be calm. If you’re a new rider, I guess the instructor just wants you to be alert and focused.

No way!!! My instructor always encourages it. Only do it if they did something good, though. I pet my horse all the time when I’m on her because she’s so good.
