What are the best home-made products for dog urine odor?

I shampoo the carpets when the smell gets awful, but that only lasts a little while. What is the best way to permanently get rid of the smell of dog urine? I am able to get rid of the stains, but the smell is still there. The smell is awful so please help me!

Dog urine is very difficult to get rid of, both the stains and the odor. The best home made recipe to get rid of it, is to first absorb as much urine out of the carpet, if the stain is still wet or the dog just urinated recently. Use paper towels or a dry cloth.
Then take equal parts of white vinegar and water and scrub it into the stain. Use a scrub brush to make sure the solution gets deep down into the carpet fibers. Use a generous amount of the vinegar/water solution to make sure it gets down into the carpet fibers. Then blot the area dry with dry paper towels or a cloth. The vinegar will neutralize and break down the ammonia in the urine, which causes the strong odor.
After the area is dry, sprinkle a handful of baking soda over the soiled area. Then mix 1/2 a cup of hydrogen peroxide with 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent and pour over the area where you sprinkled the baking soda, and work it into the area with a scrub brush. Be certain to use gloves because the hydrogen peroxide can dry your skin. Allow the area to dry and then vacuum the area.
The vinegar/water solution is the best way to neutralize and break down the ammonia in the urine which causes the bad odor. The odor is what causes dogs to keep returning and urinating on the same area, which causes a bigger odor and stain.
The baking soda and hydrogen peroxide/liquid detergent solution breaks down and gets rid of the urine stains which can go deep into the carpet fibers.
You can even use the vinegar/water solution on tile and wood floors safely for cleaning and eliminating urine odors.
Best of luck. Hope I helped.

Unless the urine has gone completely through the carpet and into the underlay( then its new carpets), put 25% white vinegar in your machine with the rest water and shampoo the carpets, with that, it gets rid of the smell ( nor does it smell like vinegar once dry…just clean)

To really get it you’ll need to find an enzyme treatment & if you can steam clean it… even better. The pad is what often holds the oder, so topical vinegar treatments aren’t always effective unless you’re using them on an area rug. But you’ll want to be careful with area rugs. Some of the handwoven ones are very delicate and can discolor. Carpet cleaning suppliers usually carry a bottle of enzyme treat at a reasonable cost… as do some pet stores.

The trick to getting the smell out is getting down into the pad below (and possible sub flooring) which takes a very deep cleaning with a steam vac or other heavy duty cleaning machine.
I’ve heard people say that vinegar and soda cuts it, but it never worked for me.
I had to rip up the carpeting, bleach the sub flooring and then use nature’s Miracle with a steamer to get the smell out of a rental I lived in..

  6. You need an enzymatic to remove the smell not something that just covers it up for the human nose..Dogs have 260 million scent glands and will smell the urine thru the other products..try this
