I assume your friend may feel the same way. Why don't you offer to take your freind to the local animal shelter and let her pick out a pet if she wants one? You can pay the adoption fee as a gift. Do you know what type of dog it is?

Dog toys are a great gift, but it would help to know what breed/size it is.

Gift Certificate at the Pet Supply Store is also good. A new dog is an expensive venture, no matter what kind. This way the new owner can buy what they need, even dog food!
