Pets should never be given as gifts. An animal is a big responsibility and the person getting the dog needs to be actively involved in the decision. Your friend may not really want a dog or maybe now, right before the holidays, is not the right time for your friend to bring a dog into the home. Honestly, I am looking to get a dog in the next few months and, since I will be the one who has to take care of it, I really don’t want someone just picking it out for me. I assume your friend may feel the same way.
Why don’t you offer to take your freind to the local animal shelter and let her pick out a pet if she wants one? You can pay the adoption fee as a gift. You would not believe all the beautiful dogs and puppies that need homes that are available right at your local shelter!
Yeah that would be a good idea

Dogs should NEVER be given as surprise gifts. A dog is a very personal choice, a person should be able to choose their own dog, assuming they even want one at all.
No reputable breeder would EVER sell a dog as a surprise present.

Sure. I’d say talk to the person getting her the dog and ask if you can acquire some of the doggie needs if they haven’t or aren’t planning to do so. Dishes, toys, leash and collar all are things your friend will need! Another idea is to maybe see if you can get a gift certificate to a puppy kindergarten class so that your friend has a head start on the training process with her new friend.
I’d just make sure you don’t give your friend your gift until the puppy is already given… might spoil the surprise.

First does your friend want a dog? If she does and has been asking for the dog, then get her a tag, collar for the dog so the dog is protected! You can also get her other dog things that she will need like shampoo, conditioner, toys lots of toys!
Don’t waist your money getting her dog accessories like sweater, shirts, shoes, for the dog! DOGS DON’T LIKE THAT!

You get the leash or collar. The dog bed! Dog toys! Maybe some dog cookies or some dog food. Maybe a dog training book. Dog coats. Oh there is so may things you could get! Just walk down the aisle at Petsmart or any other pet store.
Have fun shopping!

my dog!
that would help a lot. Just wait to give her the gift until after she gets the dog.

When I was a kid, I wanted a guitar for my birthday. My parents wrapped up a guitar pick, and when I opened it I thought, but I wanted a guitar. Then out came the guitar, so that was a fun experience I’ll never forget, and I’d do the same with your dog issue. I’d give her a dog collar or something first, and when she looks at you really weird, then bring out the pooch. Good luck!

Yes definately!
And I think giving dogs for a surprise is ok, as long as it has been discussed and researched by the giver and the receiver.
Perchance this person knows they are getting a dog, just not when! If that’s not the case, I’d have to agree with the above poster, if it’s a total surprise, probably not a good idea!
Having put my two cents in on that issue, which is probably irrelevant b/c you are niether the giver or receiver…
Do you know what type of dog it is?
Dog toys are a great gift, but it would help to know what breed/size it is.
Dog clothes, as it is winter and alot of pups need winter coats and boots etc.
Gift Certificate at the Pet Supply Store is also good. A new dog is an expensive venture, no matter what kind. This way the new owner can buy what they need, even dog food!
Good luck!!!
