Is this true that some people that are good with animals can get past a guard dog because of their gift?

When I was watching a crime documentary their was a master burglar who was able to break into the houses that had dogs and the dogs did not bite but they lick him even though he is a stranger.Is it true that there are people that animals like and if es why?
