No, not ever, unless you’re willing to keep it when the giftee gets tired of taking care of a being s/he never asked to take care of.

    NEVER!!
These are living being and owning a pet is a HUGE responsibility.
Much thought should be taken when deciding to get a cat or dog.
    Try a sweater instead.

I would but only under certain circumstances – ie the person receiving it must be sure they want it and are prepared for it, they choose it and it doesn’t arrive at Christmas time.
I would never buy one online and never ever as a surprise or for a child.
Eg I bought my hubby his GSD as a gift but we had been discussing the purchase for several months. Once it was decided it took quite a while to find the right breeder then we went out to see the dogs. We saw both parents and sat drinking tea with the breeder while the pups played in her living room. He chose which one he wanted. Technically it was his Christmas present but I think we got the pup (Kaiser) around March

Never. At the most I’d offer a picture in a box, and a note saying that you’ll go with to help pick one out, or that they can have an alternate if they want–anything but the actual animal to be given right there at Xmas. So many ‘gifts’ are dumped at the shelter within a week of the giving.

if someone asked for one for a present, maybe. all depends on the person & their responsibility level…
i asked for a kitten & got my present a little early, but we lso have 3 other cats & i adore them all (which is why the kitten hasn’t met the others yet…i’m a responsible person)

I would only offer a dog or cat as a Christmas gift to a member of my immediate family… i.e. the family that lives in the same house I live in… that way, I can make sure that the animal is properly cared for… even if I have to do it myself. I wouldn’t offer an animal as a gift to anyone outside my house unless I knew for sure that everything was kosher. It’s just me being paranoid about it.
